Serena

“Is solace any more comforting than in the arms of a sister?”

—Alice Walker

“H ere,” Laura said, handing her sisters glasses of orange juice and vodka. The three girls sat next to each other in bed, leaning against pillows propped in front of Serena’s headboard.

“Do you know what my biggest regret is?” Serena said, adjusting the cold rag on her forehead.

Amanda swallowed her drink. “Stealing Elliott from me?”

Serena threw the wet rag on the floor. “I did no such thing!”

“Naming your children Sebastian and Valentina when you knew those were the only two names I ever wanted for my own kids?” Laura said.

“That was to honor you!”

“Committing to give your sisters their rightful inheritance, shortchanging them, then not following through on the meager handout you promised?” Amanda said, taking a swig of her drink.

Serena gasped. “Shortchanging you?”

“Stealing my Barbie dolls and shaving off their hair?” Laura said.

“Stealing your Barbie dolls?” Serena said, astonished.

“Not getting your breasts enlarged when Elliott would have paid for it?” Amanda said.

Serena’s mouth was agape. “Not getting my breasts enlarged? Jeez, you two must really hate me to kick me this hard while I’m down.”

“We don’t hate you, do we?” Laura said.

Amanda hesitated. “Truthfully? Lately, I only tolerate you because you’re my sister. If you were my friend, I wouldn’t put up with your behavior.”

“If I was your friend you wouldn’t put up with my behavior?” Serena said. “What do you mean? I behave just fine.”

“You think?” Amanda said. “Tell me, how does it feel to have some predator take off with your husband? Well, that’s how we feel about you taking what should have been ours in the first place. You promised to make the variation. What are you waiting for? Seriously, tell us.”

“Sam Hermann said I had two years to do it,” Serena said, her voice hardly more than a whisper.

Amanda shook her head. “You deserve everything that’s happening to you right now.”

“She’s got a point,” said Laura. “This is karmic payback pure and simple.”

“No, it’s not,” Serena said. “I’m entitled to the entire estate, and I’m only sharing it out of the goodness of my heart. Daniel Lassiter was my real father. The only reason we have the house is because Mom sold a painting my father gave her. The study for the Goddess series is all I have left of him. These things mean something to me. I’m having a hard time signing them over to you, okay? But I’ll do it. Eventually. Can you hand me those cigarettes?” Serena lit up and took a deep puff, flicking ashes on Elliott’s Law and Order commemorative alarm clock.

“If you’re so sure Lassiter was your father, why didn’t you make a claim when he died?” Laura said. “You could have had a share of the estate.”

“I thought about it,” Serena said. “But it was before Mom got sick. I didn’t want to resurrect any old pain.”

“Oh, right, I forgot,” Amanda said, rolling her eyes. “You’re such a humanitarian.”

“Leave her alone,” Laura said. “Her husband just dumped her.
